Dancing has, historically, been viewed as a sport for girls, but that is certainly no longer the case. Over the last couple decades male dancers have become more prominent and admired, leading to an increase in boys taking up dance as their childhood sport of choice. With a rise in the popularity of hip hop, a predominantly male discipline, more boys are diving into the exciting world of performing. Dancing has become popular across social media and even video games. With this rising trend, it’s no wonder boys are starting to turn to dance as an extracurricular.
At Snap you can often find boys in the studio whether they’re here for a Little Snappers class, breakdance, or even ballet. We currently have 30+ males enrolled in different classes. Our diverse community offers a welcoming space for everyone to learn and grow as both dancers and people.
Today, boys have more and more professional male dancers to look up to and even more genres and styles of dance to fit into. Names like Travis Wall, Wade Robson, Twitch and Derek Hough, not to mention artists like Justin Timberlake or Usher – are some of the biggest, and most successful in the business. Because of this, the gap between the number of female and male dancers in a class is shrinking. For example, the graduating class of 2020 from Canada’s National Ballet School has 16 males in a class of 27. This is the first time the number of graduating male dancers has been greater than the number of graduating females – how cool is that?!.
This is an amazing growth and we hope to see it continue to rise. It is important to us that we provide a safe, educational space for all our Snappers. We strive to provide support and kindness to everyone who comes in.
